Wedding budgets can be the determining factor in nearly every decision during the wedding planning process. Regardless of budget, every couple can create stunning wedding stationery for their big day. Did you know that a typical stationery budget is 6-10% of your overall wedding budget? This includes save the dates, invitations and day of paper goods. On average, Ivory House clients spend $2500-$3000 on their wedding stationery, and the seemingly smallest choices can make a BIG difference. Personally, I love pulling out all the stops. However, it’s important to think critically about your budget and needs when it comes to selecting your paper products. I want to be sure your stationery not only fits your vision, but stays within your budget.
Below, I’ve outlined four key areas to consider when selecting stationery options. My stationery checklist can also be a useful tool for couples at all stages of planning (plus, you can grab a free download!) You can also get more info on our getting started page or read through our FAQs. Without further ado, let’s compare:
1. Make it shine
For those who want some serious sparkle in their stationery, gold foil or gilding offers an incredible look. But, adding shimmer to a design can be an expensive addition depending on items needed, number of guests, and other factors. Fortunately, non-shed glitter or even mirrored paper can be an excellent alternative to foil or gilding for a fraction of the price. Simply add a backer, envelope liner, or bellyband and you will get a nice hint of sparkle at an affordable price point.
2. Custom vs. Semi-custom
Customized stationery holds a special place in my heart, however, not all couples have the budget for a totally custom design. My semi-custom collection offers a variety of styles, colorways, and designs to suit every taste. Fortunately, these styles can be slightly altered as needed with your personal details and color palette. You can also add more of your own personal touch with a variety of add ons such as: insert cards, envelope liners, silk ribbon, and more! And if you are wanting to splurge a bit more, printing upgrades (foil and letterpress) are also available.
Whether you wish to pull out all the stops or go for a more minimal look, the most important part is the details and semi-custom stationery gives you a plethora of choices.
3. Reply Card vs. Online Reply
Due to budgetary constraints, or even personal preference, online replies can be a great option to consider. Not only do they cut down on potential paper waste, but they also make tracking guests’ responses easy. That is if your guest list is willing to embrace this modern offering. Many couples prefer the traditional style of printed reply cards. However, some couples are embracing the savings and experience that the online version offers - especially during these unprecedented times.
For those interested in the more traditional option, be sure to check out my free postage guide for tips and tricks for mailing your stationery. You can also download my stationery guide, which lays out all of the reply card options.
4. Different Printing Processes
Believe it or not, your budget can be blown quickly not by the products selected or color preferred, but by printing particulars. Our most budget-friendly options for printing are artwork-only and digital printing. If you are game for a little DIY you can go the artwork-only route. Here you’ll be in charge of all printing and assembly. If you would rather leave it to the professionals, digital printing ensures a beautiful finish whilst remaining an economical option.
On the other end of the spectrum, laser engraving, die cutting and letterpress printing are our most luxurious offerings. These offer a more sophisticated, precise, and customized experience. Screen printing and foil stamping also yield a stunning look for a more “middle-of-the-road” price point. Plus, these premium options help us support other small (mainly local), creative businesses that are experts in these intricate printing art forms.
